Hello Waupun!
What another busy and fun week. I golfed in the Waupun Football Program outing, and the Lions Club outing. I don’t golf well, but I’m always willing to act like a fool for a good cause. I do want to thank Council President Dan Siebers for filling in for me at the Mayor’s monthly visit to the Senior Center so I could golf, or at least attempt to golf!
This week, I also chaired the monthly Plan Commission meeting and on Thursday I toured the Eagle Flexible Packaging facility located on Jackson Street next to the railroad tracks. I had toured before, when the building was empty and they were beginning their hiring process, and now, three years later it’s really cool to see them expanding. Eagle now has 55 employees and is still growing. They offer good pay, benefits, and an air conditioned work space. Eagle produces flexible packaging, mostly for food, including those “Oh Snap” pickles you see everywhere. I always love getting to see cool stuff that’s made right here in Waupun! From rivets for your grill, to the paint on the Mackinac Bridge, a lot of neat things are made here in Waupun!

And finally, since becoming mayor I have been working at updating city ordinances. Many are just old and not feasible anymore, some need to be ’cleaned up’ to reflect modern times, some should go away, and a few new ones may be needed. This includes reviewing the chicken limitations and dog restraints. All this is taking time, in fact it’s taking a frustrating long time. Because the process has been slow, city administration has created an ordinance flow chart that we now review every month at our workshop committee of the whole meetings. As we make changes I’ll be keeping you up to speed.
As for dogs, we have an occasional problem with dogs (pit bulls usually) attacking dogs being walked. When this happens, the owner of the attacking dog is issued a citation, however, I always receive messages to “do more.” I will have the council discuss this, and kick around ideas. I know most people own a dog (I’m a cat person) and that passions will likely run high. Please be respectful and the next meeting with public comment will be the July Common Council meeting on the second Tuesday of the month at 6pm.
