Mayor’s Column June 17th, 2023
Rohn Bishop, Mayor of Waupun

Hello Waupun!

Let’s get back on track! As of this writing the work on the Main Street crossing is wrapping up. While WSOR Railroad was in Waupun, DPW Director Danne did bring to their attention the crossings at Lincoln, Brown, and Taylor/Jackson. The railroad did work on the loose board/pothole at the Taylor/Jackson crossing and poured new blacktop. The other crossings, while not being addressed now, are at least on their radar and hopefully get scheduled for work in the near future.

I stole the “Back on Track” line from Todd Cupery of Main Street Bistro. I know many downtown businesses were a little slower this week with all the construction projects that were going on, so this weekend let’s get down there and do a little shopping!

At Tuesday’s Common Council meeting we accepted a bid for the new Senior/Community Center. We’re hoping to break ground on this in August. Stay tuned.

Saturday, June 17th is the Historical Society’s Summer Cemetery walk. The Cemetery walk was started several years ago by my dad, and it quickly became the Historical Society’s most successful fundraiser! This year they’re trying a Summer walk, too. The weather looks to be great, so let’s dig up some history together!

Speaking of the cemetery, preparation is continuing on the Recording Angel Centennial Rededication scheduled for October 7. So, mark your calendars, grab a lawn chair, and come to Forrest Mound as we celebrate our oldest sculpture and honor the legacy of Mr. Shaler.

The Summer Parks Program got off to a great start! Registration numbers are awesome and park attendance has been high. The programs are at Dodge Park, West End Park, and Pine Street Park. On Wednesday, I had the fun privilege of being the first story time guest reader at Dodge Park. I read “Pete the Cat, and his Four Groovy Buttons.” The kids were great and we had a lot of fun. Most of the kiddos stuck around and learned some cool art skills from Jenni Maly of Imagine That! Art studio. The kids all painted pictures of Pete. It was a lot of fun and Waupun is fortunate to have such an awesome Summer program for the kids.

Are you ready to Celebrate, Waupun?! Celebrate Waupun kicks off Friday at 4pm! Friday night’s kickoff includes rides, many fun activities, a fish fry, and two great local bands. First is local favorite Acoustic Grove and they’re followed by Boogie and the YoYoz! Saturday you can “see Waupun with Mayor Rohn” on a sculpture tour, and hear The Glam Band. Sunday night it all wraps up with fireworks. I hope to see you there!

Finally, we have had a couple of unfortunate incidents at the pool and one at a park. If you have an issue or are upset about something, please don’t yell and swear at the park leader or a lifeguard. They’re high school kids doing a summer job, and it’s not their fault a policy exists. As Mayor, contact me to vent your frustrations, and I’ll get back to you with an answer.

Oh, I almost forgot, the Midtown Market is in full swing on Saturday mornings! Offering great items and delicious foods, come on downtown and enjoy a great Saturday morning! This is a wonderful time of year to live here, because Waupun has got it going on!

Thank you and God Bless,
Mayor Rohn
