Mayor’s Column September 9th, 2023
Rohn Bishop, Mayor of Waupun

Hello Waupun!

Late last week the city’s internet provider ran an update that kicked us all out of our emails for a little while.  I know I had a couple email replies that didn’t go through, and some aldermen may have, too. So, if you didn’t hear back from one of us, make sure to resend your email.

This seems like a good time to remind people why sometimes it may take me a little while to respond to a voicemail, messenger message, or an email. I’ve noticed a lot of people seem surprised when I inform them that Mayor of Waupun is a part time job. The mayor is paid $10,000 per year, it is taxed as income, and includes no benefits.  I receive multiple messages a day, a few calls, attend meetings, and average over 20 hours a week doing mayoral duties all while running my own business and being a husband and a dad. So, every once in a while, a message may get lost in the shuffle. If I don’t respond to you, always ask again, because it’s most likely I just got busy and ran out of time.

Today (Saturday) is the Rotary Club’s Beer Fest at Go-Dutch.

Speaking of beer, next weekend is Volksfest. It will be Friday night and Saturday next week, and is a fundraiser for Waupun Hockey.

Planning for the Recording Angel Rededication is complete as we prepare for the exiting weekend. Tryouts for the play, A Posion Pen Letter to an Angel, have begun and I’m portraying Waupun’s 1928 Mayor Dr. F. W. Clark. The play will be on Saturday evening October 7, following the Recording Angel ceremonies. The play is free this year and includes a cash bar.

Groundbreaking for the new Senior/Community Center is planned for Tuesday September 26.

REACH Waupun helped a bunch of kiddos this year with back-to-school items. REACH raised something like $4,900 and spent $4,700 helping kids. For that reason, I wanted to draw attention to their contribution to the youth in our community and I know they could use a few extra funds if anyone is able to help them out.

The 2024 city budget is coming along. I’m remaining committed to investing into the Hertige Museum tuck pointing, the city hall roof, some new machinery for the Public Works crew, and closing out the ARPA funds to help save the ice rink, the baseball turf, and to create a youth sports grant fund.

Finally, the Waupun Community Services Open House will be held on Monday October 9 from 5-8 pm at the Waupun Safety Building. Come see fire trucks, police cars, and learn about your Department of Public Works, the Library, local governments, and Waupun Utilities.

Thank you and God Bless,
Mayor Rohn
