WAUPUN — Mayor of Waupun Rohn Bishop officially announced his campaign to run for reelection in a press release early Wednesday morning, stating he is “eager to build on the impressive accomplishments of his first term.”
Mayor Bishop was elected as Mayor of Waupun two years ago on the platform of restoring Waupun to its historic place and to making it a better place to “live, work, and play.”
The press release cites several of Mayor Bishop’s successful policy priorities for his desire to remain as mayor. Under Mayor Bishop the City completed a number of initiatives regarding the city budget, branding, promotions and tourism, cooperation with the State Legislature, and city maintenance.
As part of the branding and tourism initiatives, Mayor Bishop reestablished the city flag and returned to the “City of Sculpture” branding, epitomized by the wayfinding signs displaying silhouettes of local sculptures. Mayor Bishop also set up the ad hoc committee for the Recording Angel Centennial Rededication Ceremony, which celebrated the 100th anniversary of Waupun’s oldest sculpture.
At the very beginning of his term, Mayor Bishop squashed the City’s interest in adopting a Transportation Utility Fee. He also directed the creation of a Local Purchasing Policy for the budget which allows the City to prioritize local businesses when making large purchases. He also oversaw the dispersion of ARPA funds, including $100,000 each to the Waupun Hockey Association to repair the rink floor and to the Waupun Baseball Complex to replace the field turf in a few years.
The Main Street railroad crossing was also repaired and a new contract established for city-wide garbage and recycling collection under Mayor Bishop’s term.
Mayor Bishop highlighted his desire to continue promoting Waupun and the success of local businesses.
“Together, we’ve strengthened our community’s foundation, both culturally and infrastructurally,” Mayor Bishop said. “From the United project in the business park, to all the projects you see downtown, Waupun really does have it going on! For all these reasons, I’m hopeful to keep our momentum going, and that’s why today, I’m announcing that I am seeking another term as your mayor, and am running for re-election!”
The mayoral election will be held on April 2, 2024, along with three of the alderman positions. No other potential candidates have announced a competing run as of Mayor Bishop’s announcement.
