Hello Waupun,
This past week was the World’s Largest Fair in Alto, and I was again honored to ride with Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt in the parade. It’s quite a fair with a lot of traditions.
Around Waupun I’ll briefly touch on issues I’m being questioned about.
Scooters – We did have a crash involving a scooter over the weekend. The city has been working on drafting an ordinance to help with safety and to ensure scooters have to follow the rules of the road. This will be back to council for a likely first reading later this month.
Fire Department – The hot rumor is that we’re making the fire department a full-time department in 2027. This is FALSE. Currently, our Fire Department operates with two full-time employees and 28 paid on call members. With ever increasing call volumes and more demands in training, and paperwork, it is very likely we will add an additional full-time person, but not the entire department.
Flock Cameras – I saw a social media post that Waupun has them and that we’re monitoring you. We’re not. Flock Cameras take a picture of a license plate and store it for up to 30 days. If Waupun Police are looking for a specific vehicle for a valid reason, they can look to see if and when that vehicle is traveling through Waupun. Not that long ago, Waupun PD used Flock to intercept a suicidal man, likely saving his life. Two weeks ago in Ohio, police used Flock to find a kidnapped girl. Here in Waupun, our Police Department has a policy to ensure that Flock Cameras are used appropriately and it’s audited monthly. Every time it’s used, the officer must have a valid reason and is required to explain that need to management. Flock is simply another tool law enforcement can use to help keep us safe.
Last Sunday we attended the Brewers game for my birthday, and following the game was the American Legion All Star Game. Congratulations to Waupun’s Chase Beahm who hit a homerun at American Family Field!
