WAUPUN — The final Waupun Fine Arts Concert in the Park this year was performed by a long-time returning band called the Madpolecats.

The concert was performed at West End Park and was the last of four concerts held every July by the Waupun Fine Arts Committee.

The Madpolecats play a unique form of music which was developed by fusing together traditional bluegrass instruments with other influences, including reggae, ska, and punk. The sub-genre has become known as “rastabilly music” or “skunkgrass.”

Several members of the band grew up in Waupun and were excited to perform here again. The group last performed for Waupun’s Concerts in the Park about seven years ago, and were the last performance when the concerts were held at Dodge Park before moving to West End Park.

State Assemblyman Mark Born, who is running to represent Waupun in the Republican Primary this August 13, gave a short speech introducing himself prior to the concert. Born has represented Beaver Dam for several years, and if elected with the new legislative district maps will represent Waupun as well.

“Another great night of music here in Waupun and they really put on some great shows,” said Mark Born. “It seems like the crowd just really appreciates it. It’s so good to see these types of community events and the strong support from the community.”

The Waupun Rotary Club served pulled pork sandwiches, chips, and cookies for concessions. The Rotary Club was selling cash raffle tickets, with half the proceeds going to the Rotary Club and the other half to REACH Waupun. The drawing will be done on September 7 at the annual Rotary Club Beerfest, which will be held at Go-Dutch Solutions from 2 to 6PM.

While this is the last Concert in the Park of this season, the Waupun Fine Arts has another event coming up next weekend. The Waupun Fine Art and Craft Fair will be held at West End Park on Saturday, August 3 from 10AM to 3PM. It will include a chalk drawing competition, silent auction, and live music by Scotty Meyer, who also played last year.
