Mayor’s Column March 23, 2024
Rohn Bishop, Mayor of Waupun

Hello Waupun,

This column will be different as it’s going to be more personal.  As Mayor I’ve lived pretty open and have shared health issues and talk about my family and I want to do more today, because I’m going to need you all to help keep me on my toes.

Often people come up to me and tell me they’re praying for me, which is always a very nice gesture. I don’t know if it’s a result of all the praying, but I have done a little soul searching and I’ve noticed that my priorities aren’t what they should be.

What do I mean?  Being mayor is a very busy job. I try to attend every event I can, visit the kids at schools, run all the meetings, give speeches, represent Waupun all over, and I enjoy doing all these things. However, the people I’m the closest to are kind of eating a poop sandwich.  I’ve realized I haven’t been the best husband or friend to a couple of my closest friends, and that’s a priority I have to work on.

I don’t know why I’m sharing all this, other than to thank you for you continued support, your prayers, and your understanding that while I am trying to give this job everything that I have, I have to prioritize family and friends more than I have been.

God has put a few amazing women in my life who’ve helped me figure this out. I want to thank my wife Jenny, my friend Carly, and my assistant Angie, for-in their own ways, and largely by accident, – for helping me understand that I had to refocus.

Waupun is a great little city, and my friend Jason and I have been visiting the churches of Waupun on Sunday mornings.  We’ve really been enjoying seeing the different services and meeting so many people.

As we approach Easter, I’m reminded that the city is closed on Good Friday.  The city renamed it the spring holiday a while ago and I have asked that we go back to calling it Good Friday.  I know the Freedom From Religion group has threatened to sue me, but so what. I think it’s the right thing to do, and it’s not the first time I’ve been threatened to be sued.

Thank you for letting me be your mayor,  Waupun! I love you all.

Thank you and God Bless,
Mayor Rohn
