WAUPUN — Gregg Zonneheld was recognized for his public service last week following his resignation from the Waupun Board of Public Works at the meeting held Tuesday, August 12.

Zonnefeld resigned from the Board citing health concerns, having been fighting brain cancer for over a year. And having gone through jurgery earlier this year, he made the difficult decision to step down from his roles at both CWC and the City of Waupun.

“It is with deepest sadness that I will need to step down from my position on the DPW Board,” Zonnefeld wrote in his letter of resignation to the Mayor. “My health no longer allows me to continue being an active member of the board. It has been a wonderful opportunity to serve the city of Waupun. I wish you and the board all the best as you carry on your work!”

Mayor Bishop presented a letter of recognition to Zonnefeld at the meeting, which received a round of applause from those in attendance.

“On behalf of our grateful community, I want to thank you for your dedication to both the City of Waupun and Central Wisconsin Christian Schools,” the Mayor wrote in his letter. “Since joining our community over 30 years ago you’ve been an advocate for the values, families, and especially the kids of CWC.”

“Over the years you’ve given back to Waupun in many ways, including serving on the Board of Public Works, both as a citizen member and as secretary of the board. As an educator and a soccer coach, you helped lead young men and women to know sportsmanship, charter, community, and God. With your retirement from CWC and the BPW, you leave a lasting legacy on Waupun, and unlike the Vikings, you are a true champion.”

“During my time as Mayor, CWC has seen remarkable growth. I truly believe that our friendship, and your leadership, has helped to improve the relationship between the city and the school, and I’m proud of that. CWC is an asset to Waupun, and for 33 years you have been an asset to CWC. The City of Sculpture and CWC will both miss your leadership, your passion, and your commitment to the youth of Waupun.”

“Thank you for your service and God bless you in retirement,” Mayor Bishop concluded the letter.

Gregg Zonnefeld retired from 33 years at CWC last month, with a retirement celebration event which was attended by many of those whose lives he touched in his many years of service to the community.
