Strengthening Public Safety in Wisconsin — Column by Rep. Mark Born (R-Beaver Dam)
July 25, 2025

Earlier this month, the Legislature took meaningful steps to enhance public safety across Wisconsin—including right here in the 37th Assembly District—through the 2025-2027 biennial budget. Among the most significant components of the budget was the approval of 42 new Assistant District Attorney positions statewide, with four of those allocated to Fond du Lac County. This investment brings all counties to nearly 80% of their recommended staffing levels and, when paired with additional staff in the State Public Defender’s Office, takes a major step forward in ensuring timely, effective justice for victims and those accused.

The Legislature also advanced several key measures in the Department of Corrections budget to improve conditions for both staff and inmates. As a former third-shift correctional officer at the Dodge County Jail, I know firsthand how essential around-the-clock medical care is in a correctional setting. That’s why I’m especially proud to have supported funding for 24/7 medical staff at Fox Lake Correctional Institution—an upgrade that will increase safety for correctional staff, improve facility operations, and safeguard the constitutional rights of inmates.

We also voted to maintain funding for wage increases and overtime support for correctional officers—provisions from the previous budget that have already made a real difference in addressing staffing shortages and improving working conditions inside our correctional facilities. These are smart, targeted investments that not only support the dedicated people who keep our institutions secure, but also help create safer, more stable environments for everyone. Just as important is our continued investment in community corrections, including raises for probation and parole agents. When supervision agents have the resources and support they need to manage caseloads effectively, we see better outcomes for individuals and increased safety for the public. Together, these investments strengthen the entire criminal justice system and help build safer, more resilient communities. I was proud to support a budget that reflects these priorities.
