Mayor’s Column February 22, 2025
Rohn Bishop, Mayor of Waupun
Hello Waupun!
It’s almost spring! Days are getting longer, the weather looks to be improving, Spring Training Baseball is back, and so are the Knights of Columbus Fish Fries! This year marks the 65th anniversary of the Waupun KC’s and at the weekly fish fry they have a cool display set up showing them through the years. The KC fish fry is a staple of the Lenten Season, and a great fundraising event for the Waupun KC’s. The proceeds are used for all kinds of good causes throughout the year, and the fish is delicious! Reagan and I will be at all but a couple this year, and we hope to see you there!
As for fundraisers, this Sunday’s Other Bar Meat Raffle is in support of the “We Can Do It” campaign to keep Rosie the Riveter right here in Waupun! Help us celebrate Waupun’s unique role in World War II. Waupun’s National Rivet produced almost all the rivets used during the war effort. Bur Zeratsky of National Rivet has donated half the cost of purchasing the sculpture, and now we’re less that $3,000 away from having her bought! Please come out and support this effort and help us celebrate Waupun’s unique role in World War II!
Last weekend I received a phone call from Corrections Secretary Jarred Hoy. He was kind enough to give me a heads up to the governor’s proposal for modernizing Corrections. The proposal does call for the closure of Green Bay, and to invest into Waupun Correctional. This is just the first step in what will be a long process, and debates and discussions between the legislature and the governor over what to exactly do with all the different prisons will take months. The good news is that the governor and the legislature are very well aware that Waupun is not Green Bay, and that we don’t want them closing our prison. Our efforts of raising awareness of that fact over the past year is paying off. As was the case for the shared revenue increase, respectively lobbying our legislators does work. Having those relationships and putting in the necessary time will pay off in the end. This is a big win for Waupun, and we’ll make sure Waupun’s voice is heard all through this process.
Thank you!
Keep Calm and Waup On!
Mayor Rohn
