Mayor’s Column January 25, 2025
Rohn Bishop, Mayor of Waupun
Hello Waupun!
We got through what looks like will have been the coldest week of this winter. This next week looks really nice, and as of Tuesday our sunsets will be after 5pm! And it is only 43 days until Daylight Savings.
Speaking of the weather, we all remember June and the flooding. The night of the storm I ventured through the downpour to city hall and signed a disaster declaration. The declaration gives the mayor and city officials temporary emergency powers to make decisions during the event (in this case the storm and immediate aftermath) The declaration also makes the city eligible for funds from the Wisconsin Disaster Fund. We learned this week that the city was approved, and that the WI Disaster Fund has reimbursed seventy percent of eligible expenditures, or just over $18,000. This will help the city offset costs we incurred like the dumpsters we brought in and the overtime we had to pay to city employees who worked tirelessly that week.
MSA, the city’s engineering contractor, is working on a report for us about flooding, and what if anything we can do to help mitigate floods in the future. Obviously, we can’t control the weather, and “Acts of God” will happen, but if there’s anything we can do to help relieve folks from flooding, I want to do it. I’ve learned quite a bit about where all this water comes from and why, so I’m very interested in the final report.
Quick Hits: On Tuesday, February 4 at the Community Center we will be hosting a Public Information Meeting about the ally reconstruction project at 6pm.
The Waupun Animal Shelter’s annual chili supper is coming up on February 5th, at the UCC Church on Beaver Dam Street.
Sunday January 26 is another Other Bar Meat Raffle. This is in support of Waupun Fine Arts.
Lastly, this is another busy hockey weekend in Waupun. I’m thankful for all the volunteers who help with all the local youth sporting events. It’s good for our kids and the local economy.
Thank you, Waupun and God Bless!
Mayor Rohn
