WAUPUN — The City Council approved the three new part time positions at the new Waupun Community Center. These include:

– Active Older Adult Program Assistant – M-F, 6AM to 10AM.
– Youth & Adult Program Assistant – M-F, 4PM to 8PM.
– Weekend Program Assistant – Saturdays, 8AM to 4PM and Sundays, noon to 6PM.

These jobs were reviewed and approved by the Parks & Recreation Board and presented to the City Council at the Common Council held Tuesday, December 10.

During the Council’s discussion, Alderman Pete Kaczmarski asked if the hours might go beyond what the job description lists, as according to the needs of events and rentals at the facility. City Administrator Kathy Schlieve answered that this is just their baseline.

“We had to start somewhere,” Schlieve said. “We anticipate that it’s going to grow and we may have to add another part time position. I am convinced that it is a building that cannot run itself—I’ve had the pleasure of working over there when Rachel was gone and I can tell you that pretty much every minute of the day there was something that needed to be addressed.”

“It’s by its nature something we’re going to have to figure out how to staff,” she continued. “What these positions do is start to expand normal weekday hours from 6AM to 8PM and get us into the weekend as well. I would suspect that if we get into the evening that rentals will get even later, so we’re going to have to adapt to that. But until we know what the typical traffic is, it’ll be hard to say.”

Mayor Rohn Bishop added that they had already rented the space out one Sunday night because the Christmas caroling group who typically use the City Hall auditorium could not due to the elevator being out of order. He also added that every time he’s been to the new Community Center since its grand opening it’s been extremely busy.

The job descriptions were approved unanimously by the Council.

The City Council also approved a change to the land property parcel of the former Waupun Senior Center building at 301 E Main St.

Previously the parcel included a portion of the alleyway behind the Senior Center building, which provided an exit from the parking lot behind that block of downtown business properties. The proposed change squared out the two parcels in that section of the lot, guaranteeing that the alleyway is owned by the City once the property is sold.

No information has been released about potential buyers of the former Senior Center building.
