WAUPUN — A number of Waupun students participated in the School Board meeting last week to give a small presentation about the importance of student input to decisions impacting the student body.
The club will be made up of eight students, six of which attended the board meeting along with their club advisor, Mrs. Mueller who serves as a counselor at the High School.
The students mentioned that they were still in the process of putting the club together and getting roles sorted out, but that they emphasized that they have begun outlining issues they’d like the School Board to address about the way the school is currently run.
One major point of contention brought up throughout the meeting was related to the recent miscommunication about the Girls Hockey Co-op, where Activities Director Doug Disch was looking into moving from the Fond du Lac Warbirds to the recently established Beaver Dam co-op.
“Like with the Warbirds, we want to bring about these topics that we feel passionate about,” Olivia Fitch said. “You guys are the school board but you guys aren’t students, you aren’t here every day, you aren’t here listening to the teachers talking, you aren’t in the sports, you aren’t the ones that feel the impacts of the decisions you vote on.”
“So we are here as a voice to tell you how we feel about them, because it’s truly important to us that we see change that fits the student body,” Fitch said. “It lets us ask why is this rule changing, and lets us hear your reason behind it and it helps us make the best decisions or change them.”
They also spoke about advocating for the opinions of the student body and collaborating with other clubs, including FFA, team sports, individual sports, and art and music.
