Mayor’s Column November 11th, 2023
Rohn Bishop, Mayor of Waupun

Hello Waupun!

Did you know that 3% of kids nationwide and nearly 5% of kids in Fond du Lac County suffer from ‘bedlessness’? Sleeping on the floor, couch, with parents/siblings, dog beds and yoga mats?

I’m excited to announce that an organization is spreading its services into Waupun, a group called Sleep in Heavenly Peace. SHP serves kids ages 3-17 at zero cost and no income requirements. SHP Fond du Lac is a 501c3, 100% volunteer, 100% donor funded chapter of a National organization. SHP has over 340 chapters Nationwide, and is in four countries. Each bed costs an average of $250 for a complete sleep solution. Bed, mattress, blankets, sheets and pillow are included. Fond du Lac County has had over 700 volunteers take part already in its two-and-a-half-year existence, and has already delivered over 620 beds.

SHP Waupun is looking for a small indoor storage room (200 sq feet, dry, doesn’t have to be heated). Local volunteers to assist with deliveries and building beds. The next build days when people can help are Jan 19/20 in Fond du Lac. Please contact randy.bentley@shpbeds.org for more info or if you can help.

This Sunday is the second of three meat raffles at the Other Bar in support of Waupun Holiday Help. The Other Bar has been doing meat raffles in support of area nonprofits for a while now, and with Christmas coming up, it’s important we help less fortunate kiddos have a Merry Christmas.

As a past president of Waupun Christmas Club, which was merged into Waupun Holiday Help during my time as the president, I can tell you, it’s a pretty cool feeling helping a child in need get a present they need. It might surprise you how excited some kids are to open a gift of a winter hat or gloves.

This Tuesday is the public hearing on the city budget. I really like this budget as it addresses the city’s needs, and thanks to an increase in shared revenues we’re able to invest in city needs. I’ve written about the budget a few times and won’t bore you again, you can keep an eye out for my annual budget message which will be out soon.

Friday December 1st at 6pm is the Waupun Christmas Parade! I hope to see you there!!

Finally, happy Veterans’ Day to those of you who’ve served!

Thank you and God Bless,
Mayor Rohn
