Mayor’s Column July 8th, 2023
Rohn Bishop, Mayor of Waupun

Hello Waupun!

My theme lately has been “Waupun has got it going on!”  As you travel around Waupun you can see we have a lot going on. Baseball and softball games, construction in our business park, a new street going in out by the truck stop, scaffolding in front of several downtown buildings, a new railroad crossing, busy parks and pool, and soon a groundbreaking on a new senior/community center.

Along with all that, we’re excited to announce that Waupun is receiving a $45,000 Vibrant Spaces grant from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) to fund the transformation of an underused space into a food truck alley in downtown Waupun. This will help us utilize the empty space next to Stone and Suede, and host a verity of food trucks throughout the year. We’re also hopeful to install a year-round restroom, and to use this as a community space moving forward!

Waupun is also getting a second ADA canoe/kayak launch along the Rock River.  Currently there is an ADA accessible launch at the Mill Pond.  The city is seeking feedback on the best placement of a second launch.  A couple possible locations include below the dam by Tony’s, to allow canoers to float out towards the marsh, or maybe by the windmill. We do have a survey live on the Waupun Municipal Government Facebook page, so please give us your feedback!

Have you seen that the windmill has been spinning on weekends and special occasions?  Dave Lemmenes has been working in it a little, and we are now able to have it turned on and spinning. It looks pretty cool and is a neat tribute to the Dutch heritage of much of Waupun.

Waupun Fine Arts’ Concerts in the Park started up for the month of July! Every Thursday in July you can enjoy free live music at West End park at 6:30, with food and beverages being served beginning at 5:30. I hope to see you there!

Preparations continue for the Recording Angel Centennial Rededication and a few sponsorship opportunities remain. We don’t need a lot more money,  but could use a little more.

Thank you,
Mayor Rohn
