WAUPUN — Local high school arts programs are a little bit richer in thanks to the Waupun Fine Arts Committee.

The Waupun Arts Committee donated a total of $600 to the various arts programs at Waupun Area High School and Central Wisconsin Christian, including choir, band, and visual arts. The art programs of both schools each received $100 which could be used to purchase materials or promote projects in the future.

“In the past years we’ve done some kind of contribution to the arts in the schools,” said Geraldine Buteyn, one of the directors on the Fine Arts Committee. “In the past we’ve done scholarships, but this year we decided to contribute one hundred dollars to the choral, the band, and the art departments.”

The Fine Arts Committee has run this program for about five or six years, both directly funding the arts programs and with giving out scholarships to students. Normally, Fine Arts gives out four scholarships for $500 each, one to a student in the visual arts and one to the performing arts of each school.

“Last year we didn’t have any real good candidates for scholarships,” said Charles Lehmen, Fine Arts vice president. “And so that’s why this year we went right to funding the departments.”

Fine Arts admitted that it’s less overall, but that it can be spread out among all the students in the programs and helps the teachers who are crunched at the end of the school year.
