WAUPUN — Waupun Hockey Association president Lucas Dawson and vice president Tyler Loomans addressed the Waupun City Council at Tuesday’s Common Council meeting. The topic of discussion: ARPA funding.

“It’s something that’s difficult to do on our own,” Loomans said. “We’re doing everything we can to raise this funding, but we need the help.”

Dawson described the Community Center’s needs, outlining the estimates they’ve received for replacing the building floor. In 2019 they received an estimate of $645,000 and this year they received an estimate of $752,000. One option to reduce the cost of replacement would be to go with a sand floor which would be $165,000 lower than the current estimate according to Dawson.

But with such a high price tag they are looking for ways to raise the funds they need. With just sponsorships and community donations, they have a long way to go. So what the Hockey Association hopes to accomplish is securing enough funding from the ARPA grant given to the City of Waupun so they can replace the Community Center floor.

The Waupun Community Center is owned by the City of Waupun and operated by the Hockey Association. More than just an ice rink, the Community Center serves as an event center for large events including Celebrate Waupun, the Truck-n-Show, and Volksfest.

“We couldn’t do it without the help from you guys,” Loomans concluded. “It’s been a great partnership. We need to keep this place relevant for whatever event we could have; whether that be the ice rink, Volksfest, or Truckers, it’s beneficial to everyone.”
