WAUPUN — Mayor of Waupun Rohn Bishop is fundraising for adjustments to new city wayfinder signs to be installed in the near future. This comes as part of the Mayor’s initiative to refocus city branding on local cultural assets, recentering “City of Sculpture” as Waupun’s title and primary point of city heritage.

The wayfinder signs were purchased by the city for $5,000 late last year. The signs included directions to various landmarks as well as “Welcome to Waupun” signs with the current municipal logo on it. But when then-Alderman Rohn Bishop asked, none of the other members of City Council remembered authorizing a design and purchasing the new signs. There had been resolutions in previous few years to replace the current city signs, but the Council had not discussed the purchase until after it had been completed, leading to questions about the final decision to order. Upon their arrival in Waupun, an embargo was placed on the signs’ installation by then-Alderman Rohn Bishop to decide what to do with them.

While the signs currently have the previous municipal logo in the corn leaf design, Mayor Bishop plans on purchasing decals through the same company to cover up the old logo. The decal is an End of the Trail silhouette and the text “City of Sculpture” in the same style as the Office of the Mayor emblem that Mayor Bishop unveiled last month.

“Cost is about $1,400 to have the stickers made to cover all 27 signs,” Mayor Bishop told Waupun Pioneer in an email. “I will cover the cost and gladly accept donations from anyone willing to help.” Former Historical Society President Jay Graff and Alderwoman Nancy Vanderkin have both offered to donate to Mayor Bishop’s sign adjustment fund.

The Board of Public Works and Facilities Committee is holding a meeting on Tuesday at 4:30pm to approve the purchase and use of the decal.
