WAUPUN — The Waupun Police Department is looking for information on two separate instances of sod stolen from Medema Fields.

In the first incident, about 35 feet of rolled sod was stolen from Field #2 and Field #3 sometime before the morning of August 23.

The second incident came only a week later, occuring sometime between Friday, August 30 at 5PM through Saturday, August 31 at 2PM, when it was discovered. The sod was again stolen from Field #2 and Field #3, which had been repaired since the previous week.

The first incident was related in a post from the Waupun Police Department requesting any information about the theft, which was posted the morning of August 23. The second was in a post from the Waupun Girls Softball Association’s Facebook page, posted at 9PM on August 31.

Both posts received a large amount of community attention, with many pointing out the absurdity of the situation. As of September 2, the first post had 176 shares on Facebook and the second post had 83 shares.

Many commenters speculated on the incidents, including the motive and whether it required a sod cutter. However, the sod was recently laid when the incidents occurred and haven’t had the time to bind together, meaning no tools would be required to pull up the sod and could be simply rolled up and hauled away.

Some commenters recommended putting up trail cameras to watch for the thief. Other commenters joked about setting up a “Sod Patrol Post” as a neighborhood watch.

No post has been made from either the Softball Association or the Waupun Police Department regarding any leads.

The stolen sod has been since replaced, but a patch of about four feet was still unfilled on Field #3 as of September 2.

If you have any information about either of these incidents please contact the Waupun Police Department at (920) 324-7911.
