WAUPUN — On Friday, March 14, at 9:19 p.m., the Waupun Fire Department responded to a report of a gas odor at 320 E. Main Street. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered that a gas line and meter had been sheared off at ground level, resulting in an active gas leak.
As a precaution, fire crews initiated the evacuation of all buildings on the north side of the 300 block of E. Main Street. Additionally, E. Main Street and N. Madison Street were temporarily closed to ensure public safety.
Crews from Alliant Energy arrived on the scene and were able to control the gas leak within 30 minutes. Fire personnel worked alongside Alliant Energy staff to inspect the affected buildings and ensure they were safe for re-entry.
By 11:15 p.m., all evacuees were allowed to return to their residences and businesses. In total, 20 individuals were evacuated, and 20 properties experienced gas service disruptions. Alliant Energy will be back on scene on Saturday morning to continue with repairs and working with property owners on re-lighting pilot lights.
No injuries were reported during the incident.
