Mayor’s Column March 8, 2025
Rohn Bishop, Mayor of Waupun
Hello Waupun,
It looks like Spring is here! This weekend we will change our clocks, and this past week the Public Works Department put up new U.S., Wisconsin, and City of Waupun flags all around the city. My thanks to the DPW crew who do a great job making Waupun look great!
This weekend Waupun is hosting the WAHA Pee Wee 3A State Tournament! Good luck to all the Waupun kiddos participating, and a special shout out to my little hockey loving friend Lakynn. I won’t be able to make it, as ’ll be cheering on my girls at a dance competition in Dubuque, but I’ll try to watch some of the action online.
The Recreation Department has hired several part time staff to help us offer more open hours at the new Community Center. Hopefully within the next month or so, we’ll have early morning and evening hours to allow more members of our community to utilize the new building. So if you’re looking for early morning, weekends, or evening workouts, walking, pool, pickleball, basketball, or just hanging out, we’re almost there and will be open more soon!
Speaking of the new Community Center, a request I get a lot, and I mean a lot, from seniors is, “why aren’t there more handicap spaces?” The answer is the building has enough spaces to accommodate federal law, and the entire parking lot is ADA accessible. We have much more parking, and handicap parking, then we did at the old Senior Center, and the reality is not everyone can park next to the door. That said, the answer does not seem to satisfy anyone, so I’ve asked Public Works to look into just painting more handicap spots.
Sticking with good news, this past week we swore in two new police officers, and next week we’ll have another swearing in ceremony. Once we swear in the officer next week, the Waupun Police Department will be fully staffed for the first time in years! Our police department was struggling 14 months ago, and in just over a year we’ve seen a 180* turnaround. I’m very proud of Chief Rasch and Deputy Chief Sullivan for their leadership and making the Waupun Police Department a department that officers want to work for and helping to keep Waupun one of Wisconsin’s safest cities!
Thank you, enjoy the beautiful weekend, and “Keep calm and Waup-On!”
(Thank you to Kevin Homan for the idea of the new closing salutation of my weekly columns!)
