WAUPUN — Local veterans outreach program Heroes’ Hunt for Veterans celebrated their ten year anniversary last Saturday at an all-day open house event.
Heroes’ Hunt for Veterans (HHV) is a nonprofit organization located at Camp Nickolas located at N2973 County Road M, just north of Waupun.
Every year HHV hosts several veterans a week for a genuine hunting trip experience. All costs except for travel are covered by HHV for veterans, who are selected for the program based on whether they’ve been hunting before.
Over the last ten years they’ve hosted a total of 368 veterans through their program, entirely funded by donations.
“We had an amazing turnout to our 10 year anniversary Open House, the weather couldn’t have been better,” Heroes’ Hunt for Veterans said on their Facebook page Sunday. “We are truly blessed to have seen so many old friends and made so many new friends, we can’t wait to see what the future holds. This community and surrounding area absolutely supports our Veterans!”
On top of giving a tour of the camp, the open house included a brat fry, raffle prizes, and bake sale. They also held a flag ceremony for the new “Honor Walk” installed for the flagpoles.
“We’d like to thank everyone who came out to support HHV, especially the volunteers who helped, our board members, the bake sale ladies who donated all them goodies, Jim Warner for running our shuttle all day in the heat, Dodge County Antique Power Club for the use of the hayride wagon, the Marine Corp League for the beautiful Flag ceremony, the City of Waupun for the picnic tables and the parking area, FDL County for the road signs, and Leroy Meats for the delicious food they provided,” the post said.
Earlier this month Heroes’ Hunt received a $18,600 donation from Tigers Bar and Grill, who held a “Hike for Heroes” fundraiser event back in April.
