FOND DU LAC — An antique postcard was recently delivered to St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac, sent by a 94 year old from California who made a hobby of returning postcards to their original locations. The note identified the 94 year old man as Lowell Joerg from Stockton, California.
According to the note, Joerg found the postcard at an antique store in California and like many other antique postcards he’s sent, he decided to return it to Fond du Lac. After receiving the postcard, the hospital contacted the Waupun Historical Society to learn more about the postcard’s history, as both the original author and recipient were from Waupun.
Waupun Historical Society president Zac Dickhut was able to decipher the faded handwriting and identify the original author and recipient. The postcard was sent from David Stoddart to his nephew George Stoddart, dated December 18th, 1918 at 1:30 p.m. While both were residents of Waupun, David Stoddart sent the postcard from Fond du Lac as he was likely being treated for the flu at St. Agnes.
“Although he recovered, he had lingering health issues until he passed away in 1925 at the age of 78,” the Waupun Historical Society said in a Facebook post. “He wrote this little note to his nephew George, who was 8 years old. George and David Stoddart are at rest only a few rows apart in Waupun’s Forest Mound Cemetery.”
