WAUPUN — The Waupun City Council voted to forgo a primary election this winter due to a lack of candidates who have announced running for local office.
The vote was made at the Common Council meeting held Tuesday the 12th.
According to the meeting agenda packet, the City of Waupun does not have an ordinance that requires primaries for elections. This means that the City will only have a primary if the Council votes in favor of holding one.
If the City decides to hold a primary before the election, the Council must vote in favor of it “not later than 3 days after the deadline for filing nomination papers.” Alternatively, the Electors of the City may also request a primary by filing “a sufficient petition requesting a primary within 3 days after the deadline for filing nomination papers.”
If the Council did not vote at that meeting, it would have required a special meeting to vote on the issue before the deadline.
Aldermanic Districts up for election this year are 2, 4, and 6, as well as the Mayor of Waupun. All positions are up for election every two years, with Alderman Districts 1, 3, and 5 on the alternating year.
The incumbents up for reelection are Alderman Pete Kaczmarski (District 2), Alderman Mike Matoushek (District 4), Alderwoman Bobbi Jo Kunz (District 6), and Mayor of Waupun Rohn Bishop.
As of the meeting only the incumbents had applied to be on the ballot.
The deadline for filing for candidacy is January 2nd, requiring a final decision by January 5th.
The Council also unanimously approved the list of City election officials. The list of election officials and workers included over 30 names of City of Waupun residents.
The City Council will reconvene in January.
