Mayor’s Column November 1, 2025
Rohn Bishop, Mayor of Waupun
Hello Waupun,
If you’re like me, just living your busy life day to day, you probably barely notice the government is shutdown. In fact, if it wasn’t for the constant news coverage I wonder how many of us would notice it’s closed. It feels like when these shutdowns happen, politicians grandstand, the media works up a frenzy, the shutdown lasts a bit and we move on. This time, however, both sides seem really dug in, and as the calendar turns from October to November it may now begin to affect us here locally.
It appears the shutdown is shutting down the SNAP program, (As I write this that’s being argued in court) and that could affect residents here in Waupun and the Waupun Area. I say all this because it looks like this will be a time for our community to step up and help those truly in need; and that effort begins this morning with the Waupun Fire Department. WFD will be hosting their 17th annual food drive today from 9 am to 1 pm. This is our chance to help keep our pantry shelves full. The Fire Department is accepting shelf-stable foods and cash donations. There are three locations where you can participate: the Fire Department, Piggly Wiggly and Tractor Supply.
The Waupun Food Pantry, too, is preparing to be busier than normal, and could really use donations, whether monetary or food or clothing. Terri and the gang do a magnificent job helping people in need. They’re located at the new Community Center and you can learn more here: https://www.waupunfoodpantry.org/
I’m asking everyone who’s able to join in this effort. Every can, every dollar, and every act of kindness makes a difference. Together, we can ensure no one in our city goes hungry.
Special shoutout to the Firefighters who early this morning dealt with a fire call, will be collecting food donations, and then this evening is the Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery event sponsored by Tony’s Pizza. I’m thankful for the dedication of the team we have at the WFD.
This weekend also kicks off the Holiday Shopping Season for Waupun local businesses, and I noticed the city was busy yesterday. There are so many neat stores throughout Waupun and we’ve really become a destination for people to shop, eat, and have a good time. Tonight is the Holiday Wine Walk and we change our clocks back an hour tonight.
As always, Waupun really has it going on!
Thank you,
Mayor Rohn
