WAUPUN — Construction is coming along on the Waupun Ice Arena flooring, but the Waupun Hockey Association is calling for volunteers in an effort to reduce labor costs on the project.

“We need YOUR help! Our Save the Ice floor project is in full swing, and now is the time that we need our wonderful hockey families to come together to complete this project,” Waupun Hockey wrote last Thursday in a Facebook post. “Our association will be able to save $27,000 by providing volunteer man hours to assist in finishing up the project.”

Volunteers are required for three weeks from Monday, August 18 to Thursday, September 4.

Shifts are two hours each from 1:45PM to 9PM weekdays for a total of four shifts each day, and 7:45PM to 9PM on Saturday, August 23 for seven shifts.

Roles are mostly related to manual labor, with each day having a different construction step including installing subfloor piping, granular fill, insulation, barriers, rebar, tubing, and mesh. The final day on September 4 will be a final check and clean up day if all construction is able to be completed by volunteers.

“After speaking with the contractors, it’s clear: if this phase of the project isn’t completed on time, we won’t have ice until at least the END of October,” Waupun Hockey posted Sunday morning. “Let’s rally together and make it happen — for the kids of this community. Please help us fill the remaining volunteer slots and keep things on track!”

“We are all excited to get this complete for the kids, but we need the help of the community,” Danielle McKnight wrote to Facebook Sunday. “Please volunteer some time. Many hands accomplish big things. Waupun is a great community, let’s come together on this. You don’t have to be part of hockey to help us.”

Volunteer hours for the construction project will not count towards hockey season volunteer hours. Anyone 18 years or older is welcome to help, and non-association members are encouraged to sign up.

Most of Monday, August 18 and Tuesday, August 19 were filled as of publishing time.
