WAUPUN — Central Wisconsin Christian High School student Hayden Wierenga is good at juggling. Juggling school and farm life, that is. Hayden is the 4th generation of family helping to run his family’s farm Wierenga Dairy in Waupun. He was just named Wisconsin Dairy Athlete of the Month for May by the Wisconsin Sports Network and Dairy Farmers of Wisconsin because of his ability to balance his school and athletic achievements.

In addition to his academic work, Hayden is a defensive outside back on his soccer team and is also Vice President of the school’s Ag Club. He also shows dairy and swine through Alto All-Stars 4H and shoots Trap with both Waupun Warrior and CWC Trap Clubs.

Hayden, who has been involved in helping on his family’s farm for as long as he can remember, became more actively involved in 2020. Now his role is to clean heifers at the heifer facility, bed calves at the dairy facility, assist during baling seasons, operate machinery, observe overall health of the herd and perform many other duties, as needed.

“I love that each day brings something new,” Hayden said. “There is always a variety of things to learn about electricity, plumbing, diesel tech, welding, ag mechanics, agronomy, and herdsmanship.”

He is also proud to work alongside his dad, uncle, cousins, and grandpa. He notes that his ability to balance school, farm, and athletic activities is really due to family and friends who are flexible and understanding.
