WAUPUN — The newest art gallery was set up this week at the Waupun Public Library, this time from artist Stephen Curtis.
The Waupun Fine Arts Committee held an artist reception Thursday evening to commemorate the gallery’s opening, giving Curtis the time to explain his background artistic process.
Before getting into painting he was a professional photographer and video editor, having attended film school in Chicago in the 1980s.
His works focus on transforming professional photography into photorealistic paintings, along with a number of abstract pieces. While he had been interested in art for most of his life, he only seriously began painting in 2014.
“I feel like I’ve come a long way with my art, but I still feel like I have even farther to go and a lot more artwork ahead,” Curtis said.
According to his website, Curtis has produced over 100 paintings since 2013 of various sizes and subjects, including landscapes, portraits, and abstract.
“Whatever you need to do that’s an art, which would include writing, designing, decorating, anything that has to do with a problem you’re trying to solve,” Curtis said. “You really have to work at it and decide if it’s something you’re going to turn professional about or if it’s a sideline. And keep your priorities correct.”
Curtis has lived in Randolph for the last 4 years.
The artwork will be on display in the upstairs fiction area of the Waupun Public Library for the next few months.
Last August they hosted artwork from students at Central Wisconsin Christian.
