Mayor’s Column September 28, 2024
Rohn Bishop, Mayor of Waupun
Hello Waupun,
It’s been a busy week.
First, I took a complaint that there’s a truck beached in the Wells Fargo parking lot. It has flat tires and no plates. I have passed the information along to the Police Department. The truck is on private property, so the bank will be ticketed and responsible for getting the truck removed.
Second, on East Franklin Street, there’s a house feeding stray cats. This too has been passed along to the Police. The homeowner is in violation of city ordinance by feeding feral cats, and because they go into the house, the homeowner is in violation of having unlicensed pets. The homeowner will be cited for that, too.
Third, I received some rude emails about an unusual amount of truck traffic and speeding on South Madison Street. I forwarded the information along to the PD and we are upping enforcement.
A few weeks ago, I had a complaint about speeding on East Main. This complaint is nothing new. That’s why we installed the digital speed limit sign, and we installed another “Speed Limit 25” sign.
Over the Summer, I had several complaints from a homeowner on North Madison Street about loud vehicles and speeding, and we upped enforcement there for a few weeks. We stopped a lot of vehicles and things seem to have improved.
Since June, I have received many emails and calls about flooding issues. We will be having a special meeting to review the flooding, what’s causing the flooding, and why it’s happening more often than it used to.
At my regular Senior Center visit, I explained the fees regarding the new building, ($5 or $10 per month) and what to expect when we move.
On Tuesday, we had a council meeting, where we learned about the different kinds of drugs infiltrating our area, and we moved the general election to the new community/senior center, because the elevator at city hall isn’t working.
Also this past two weeks, I wrote a letter in support of a grant for the new sculpture tours, have been dealing with the dam issue, attended the swearing in of two new law enforcement positions, chaired the plan commission where we approved a few new developments, attended the monthly mayoral strategy meeting, and sat in on the monthly department heads meeting before attending Gysbers’ ribbon cutting.
As a reminder, the ribbon cutting for the new Food Truck Alley is next Saturday. The railroad crossing on Brown Street will be getting replaced, so that will mean we’ve worked on Main Street, Lincoln Street, Brown Street and Taylor/Jackosn Street crossings all in about a year’s time.
Bulk pickup begins Monday, and a year plus into the new garbage company, things seem to be going really well.
We’re working with the railroad to remove the brush piling up along the old railroad bridge trestles, and removal of those old trestles.
And those are just the issues I’m allowed to publicly talk about! Anyway, that is what’s up, Waupun!
Thank you,
Mayor Rohn
