WAUPUN — Fond du Lac County is taking suggestions for what should be the future name of the county park northwest of Waupun.

According to Mayor Bishop, renovation plans to the Waupun County Park are close to completion and they thought this was the perfect time to look into giving the park a less generic name.

“The Waupun County Park has been known as ‘the county park’ since about forever,” Mayor Bishop said. “County Executive Sam Kaufman called me up and asked about the idea of actually giving it a name, and then what to name it—after who or why. So we’re opening it up to the public here in Waupun for ideas and suggestions on what the Waupun County Park should be called.”

Last July, Mayor Bishop met with County Executive Kaufman, County Supervisors Michael Beer and Jon Venhuizen, and County Parks Director Terry Dietzel to discuss what they could do to improve Waupun County Park.

This included repairing the roads and parking lots, cleaning up the river’s bend WPA project, rebuilding the band dome, and adding some new sports equipment—including new volleyball and pickleball courts. They would also be putting up new “County Park” signs, which would include the new name, whatever they end up deciding on.

“Those signs are what started this,” Mayor Bishop said. “When they saw them they said, ‘really, it’s just ‘Waupun County Park’?’ It’s not ‘Waupun County.’’ And all the other county parks have a name to them so the County Executive thought it would be a fun idea if he worked with me to open it up to the residents of Waupun to ask what they think it should be called.”

Once the plans are completed for the project, they will begin work sometime this spring. Fond du Lac County is working closely with Mayor Bishop to get his input on what they end up adding to the park.

Other planned renovations to the park included new flagpoles and improved campsites. The campground section offers 38 total campsites.

County Executive Sam Kaufman could not be reached as of publishing time.
