WAUPUN — The 2023 Wisconsin Spring election will be held Tuesday, April 4th, 2023. On the ballot are elections for the Wisconsin State Supreme Court, three statewide referendums, and contests for local offices such as school board, county courts, town boards, and seats for the Waupun City Council.
An article with further information about the upcoming School Board Election will be published Monday. The three candidates are incumbents Stephen Chene and Jennie Patrykus, and challenger Dustin Gassner.
Waupun Alderman District 1 is currently seated by incumbent Alderman Jason Westphal, with challenger Karissa J. Smits running against him. No other Alderman seats face challengers this election.
Residents of the City of Waupun will also be voting for the Beaver Dam Municipal Court Judge, which is contested between Waupun resident Todd A. Snow and Beaver Dam resident Maryann S. Schacht.
There is one statewide race for Wisconsin Supreme Court between Justice Daniel Kelly and Judge Janet C. Protasiewicz.
Also on the ballot are three statewide YES/NO referendum questions, the language for which can be found below.
Question 1 – State of Wisconsin Conditions of Release Before Conviction Referendum: “Conditions of release before conviction. Shall section 8 (2) of article I of the constitution be amended to allow a court to impose on an accused person being released before conviction conditions that are designed to protect the community from serious harm?”
Question 2 – State of Wisconsin Cash Bail Before Conviction Referendum: “Cash bail before conviction. Shall section 8 (2) of article I of the constitution be amended to allow a court to impose cash bail on a person accused of a violent crime based on the totality of the circumstances, including the accused’s previous convictions for a violent crime, the probability that the accused will fail to appear, the need to protect the community from serious harm and prevent witness intimidation, and potential affirmative defenses?”
Question 3 – State of Wisconsin Welfare Benefits Referendum: “Shall able-bodied, childless adults be required to look for work in order to receive taxpayer-funded welfare benefits?”
