Mayor’s Column October 17, 2026
Rohn Bishop, Mayor of Waupun
Hello Waupun,
“Oh my God!!, the Brewers win the pennant!” screamed Jeff Levering on WTMJ and the Milwaukee Brewers Radio Network, paying tribute to the late Bob Uecker, and his famous call in the movie “Major League.”
To quote “Moneyball,” “How can you not be romantic about baseball?” Congratulations to the Milwaukee Brewers for winning the National League Pennant! As a Cubs fan, (and a Milwaukee Brewers season ticket holder in the old County Stadium days) one thing Cubs fans, Brewers Fans, and most baseball fans have in common is an appreciation how hard it is to be a pennant winner. The Chicago Cubs have been playing since 1876 and have only won three World Series in 150 years. The Milwaukee Brewers have been playing since 1969 but have yet to win one. It feels like this is the year!
When the Cubs won in 2016, I remember being overcome with so many emotions, and I see that with my Brewers’ fan friends now. Excitement for winning, and thinking about relatives who’ve passed, who’d have loved to see the Brewers in the World Series. The Milwaukee Brewers have had a magical season, and let’s hope it continues. And enjoy it! Go Brew Crew!
Before I continue, I would like to recognize three former Waupun Police officers who have recently passed away. Jim Parish, Jim Levey, and Steve Bahr. My condolences to their families and Waupun is thankful for their service to our community.
I recently had a complaint about the Saturday weekly outdoor warning siren test. Waupun participates with the county wide siren test for a few reasons.
• It allows us to make sure all sirens sound and work
• It allows for dispatch to make sure all activation devices work
• We have to sound them to keep the siren device lubricated and working
• We do the weekly test instead of the daily test, because people didn’t like them going on every day
The test does occasionally find a siren that didn’t sound or wasn’t working properly. It’s better to learn that at noon on Saturday than during a Tornado Warned storm. I know many dogs don’t love it, and they can be loud and annoying. But those are the reasons the sirens sound every Saturday. They sound for three minutes, which is the default setting of the sirens. Yes, it is true, we can kill the sirens once they sound, however that would require bringing someone in to do so.
In other news, Shaler Drive is close to being open, and the alley project is nearing completion.
Thank you and Waup-On
Mayor Rohn
