Young entrepreneurs open shop at Discover Waupun Youth Market
WAUPUN — For one evening, Main Street in downtown Waupun will become home to dozens of businesses owned and operated by kids.
Discover Waupun’s Youth Market will take place Friday, Aug. 7, from 5 to 8pm, bringing together young entrepreneurs from across the area to sell everything from handmade crafts and baked goods to artwork, jewelry and other original products.
The event has grown significantly since registration opened earlier this summer. Interest from young vendors exceeded organizers’ expectations, leading Discover Waupun to expand the market and temporarily close Main Street to create additional space for vendors and visitors.
“We expected a good response, but the enthusiasm from these young entrepreneurs has been incredible,” said Brooke Straks, owner of Wind and Unwined and Executive Director of Discover Waupun. “It’s exciting to see so many kids create something of their own and learn what it takes to run a business.”
While shoppers will find plenty of unique items for sale, organizers say the event is really about providing young people with an opportunity to develop confidence, creativity and real-world business skills.
“We’re not just filling Main Street with booths,” Straks said. “We’re filling it with future business owners, creators and community leaders. We hope people come downtown not only to shop, but to encourage these young entrepreneurs as they take this first step.”
The Youth Market is free to attend and open to the public. In addition to Friday’s market, Discover Waupun will host live music, bounce houses for children and a Chili Dog Fundraiser. After the market, a free showing of Lilo & Stitch will kick off at 8:45pm in the downtown greenspace. Guests are encouraged to bring a blanket, lawn chairs and bug spray to enjoy the show.
All weekend, visitors can shop sidewalk sales at local businesses as part of the Dog Days of Summer promotions. Participating businesses will also feature extended hours as part of the event.
