WAUPUN — Senior citizens heard from Mayor of Waupun Rohn Bishop and former mayor Julie Nickel about the move into the new Waupun Community Center which completed construction earlier this month.

The project began during Julie Nickel’s tenure as Mayor of Waupun when she and City Administrator Kathy Schlieve submitted applications towards grants for community development. This culminated on March 7, 2022 when they announced at the Senior Center that they received a nearly $5 million grant from the State of Wisconsin’s Neighborhood Investment Fund grant program.

Plans were quickly begun on the facility, which was decided to be located on the location of the former Central Wisconsin Christian Elementary School, at the time the Laird Museum. Ground was broken on Tuesday, September 26, 2023 and construction was completed in just over a year—with the Recreation Department moving in last week as they were making finishing touches.

Mayor Bishop holds a listening session on the third Tuesday of every month, previously at the old Senior Center and now in the dining hall at the new facility. The listening session covered a number of topics, including the building’s amenities, the upcoming election, the wastewater plant and flooding issues, and other topics.

Also discussed were the Waupun Food Pantry and REACH Waupun, which will be moving into the building by next month.
